[AWA] argument 26

The following appeared in an article written by Dr. Karp, an anthropologist. "Twenty years ago Dr. Field, a noted anthropologist, visited the island of Tertia and concluded from his observations that children in Tertia were reared by an entire village rather than by their own biological parents. However, my recent interviews with children living in the group of islands that includes Tertia show that these children spend much more time talking about their biological parents than about other adults in the village. This research proves that Dr. Field's conclusion about Tertian village culture is false, and thus that the observation-centered approach to studying cultures is invalid. Because they are using the interview-centered method, my team of graduate students working in Tertia will establish a much more accurate understanding of child-rearing traditions there and in other island cultures."

The arugument reveal directly Dr.Karp's opinion in another anthropologist, Dr. Field'sresearch. They are both anthropologists and may have their own fileds that are proficient. The argument is based on Dr.Karp's side, and is lack of fairness. At the same timehe mentioned less on how the researches and their surveys, therefore it's hardto agree with Dr. Karp's idea.

First of all, it seems like Dr.Karp is treating Dr.Field as his competitor in the field of child-rearing traditions. Dr. Karp is announcing a completely opposite idea of Terista village culture that make us confused. He was eager in corroboratingthat Dr. Field's survey was invalid. This leads us to think that Dr.Karp is merely offending Dr. Field.

In order to compare the facts of different researches fairly, we must have the same standard. Dr. Karp didn't mention much about Dr. Field and his own research. We know less about their survey. How their surveys were done? Were the group of children in Terisa being observed the same? Were their surveys done in the same time? Since the bases are different, they might get different results. Lacking of clear evidence,Dr. Karp didn't persuade us into agreeing that children in Terita are reared by their biological parents.

Although Dr. Karp offered his working group have been to Terita and survied the children.Since the comments of Dr. Karp are vague, and we know less about Dr.Field's experiment, we can't distinguish which side of them is correct. Perhaps they are both right accordingto a different points of view.
